The great ruins of Petra, located in Jordan, are one of the more famous locations in movie history. This was the resting place for the Holy Grail in the 1989 movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Numerous groups run daily tours though this gorgeous location.
Star Wars - Tunisia
Star Wars is one of the most famous movies of all time, and its desert scenes are some of its most beloved. The alien-infested deserts of Tatooine, home to Luke Skywalker, were films largely in the Tunisian desert, and appropriated much of the local architecture and culture to represent its otherworldly inhabitants.
The Sound of Music - Salzburg, Austria
The Austrian city of Salzburg is the famed location for the 1965 classic The Sound of Music, in which an Austrian nun attempts to escape Nazi agents. Though reportedly unpopular with Austrians themselves, the movie draws thousands each year, to see this classic film city.

Goldeneye - Verzasca Dam, Switzerland
Also known as the Contra Dam, this Swiss goliath was the scene of perhaps the most famous moment in James Bond history: The stomach-churning jump which kicked off 1995’s James Bond: Goldeneye. Walk its incredible breadth and look down, and remember that which Pierce Brosnan did not himself jump, someone else really did.
The Lord of the Rings - New Zealand
New Zealand’s economy got an enormous jolt when the Lord of the Rings movies were released, and with good reason; the rolling hills and incredible vistas would entice just about any traveler. For those with a true love of the source material, the famous Hobbiton set has been preserved as a tourist attraction.
The Beach - Maya Beach, Thailand
Thailand’s Kho Phippi-Maya Beach was the setting and filming location for Danny Boyle’s 2000 film The Beach. Maya Beach is gorgeous enough to entice its characters into a foolhardy visit; travelers will find it much better developed, with a thriving diving industry.

The Australian outback is known for being stark and unforgiving, but never has it seemed so dystopian as in Mel Gibson’s 1979 breakout hit Mad Max. The earthy colors and distant horizons made the perfect setting for a post-apocalyptic thriller, and make it just as perfect to visit - just watch out for roving bikers.
