Last month, Canadian Traveller was treated to a surprise delivery postmarked from Washington, D.C. It was a “hello package” sent by the Lyle, a new independent hotel from Lore Group which opened its doors in April 2021.

Inside the box, we found D.S. & Durga shower gel (a nod to the line of personal care items stocked in-room) and the ingredients needed to blend a Bee’s Knees cocktail—one of Lyle’s most popularly requested bar libations.

When it’s safe to travel again, we’ll be keeping this 196-room property in D.C.’s Dupont Circle top of mind for so many reasons…

Housed in an early 1940s Art Deco building, we’re especially smitten with Lore Group Creative Director Jacu Strauss’ use of natural materials and handsome furnishings which include Burl wood headboards, rattan seating, Berber carpets and handmade tiles. Strauss is also the personality behind the paintbrush; during the pandemic he single-handedly created the 50 original pieces of art that adorn Lyle’s walls.

Lyle was not purpose built as a hotel. The building was originally an apartment building which lends nicely to its mission: “Taking the best of what you’d find at home and making it better.”

“It’s our priority for our guests to feel as content and comfortable during their time at Lyle, as they might when staying in a friend’s beautiful apartment,” says Abe Liao, Lore Group’s Regional General Manager for the D.C area.

Families and long-stay visitors will appreciate that more than a quarter of The Lyle’s rooms and suites feature kitchenettes.

As for sampling that infamous Bee’s Knees cocktail, we’ll be sure to make our order from a plush bench seat beneath the stunning custom Herman Miller pendant cluster. Foodies perusing the menu of seasonal, contemporary American fare will be pleased to learn that the restaurant and bar are stewarded by Chef Nicholas Sharpe who previously worked at the Michelin-starred Fiamma in New York City

Bon appétit and bon voyage!
