The name Macy’s needs no explanation. In 1858, it started out as a small, dry goods store on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City. Today, it has become one of the largest retailers in the world with over 850 stores and furniture galleries within the US, Guam and Puerto Rico, all operating under the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s names.

A pioneer in its field back in the day, its revolutionary business practices included a one-price system where the same product was sold at a fixed price. It also quoted specific prices for goods in newspaper advertising. Known for its creative merchandising, Macy’s was the first to introduce the tea bag, the Idaho baked potato and coloured bath towels.

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade started out as a Christmas Parade in 1924 when migrant staff celebrated their new American beginnings through a procession of floats, bands and animals from the zoo.

Specially for overseas travellers, the Macy’s International Visitors Savings Pass offers an exclusive 10 per cent discount that can be used at any location across the US over a 30-day period. The Pass is available for free from any store; just speak to any sales associate. Electronic versions can be printed from www.VisitMacysUSA.com.

LevisMacy’s now has 12 Visitor Centers within stores; six having opened within the past year in Boston, Hawaii, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and Washington DC. While services at each venue may vary, the Visitor Centers allow shoppers to get hold of maps and tourist information, and even check in luggage or coats to free up their arms while shopping.

This summer, Macy’s celebrates all things American. This will feature an all-star salute to the people, places and things Americans love – from hot dogs and Hollywood to denim jeans and legendary designers. Exciting merchandise by some of the country’s best designers and brands will be showcased in stores including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi and Nike.

Shopping packages are also available for stores in Boston, Chicago, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco and Washington DC. Offers include a gift card that can be used to offset purchases, a unique tote bag, and special discounts at in-store restaurants and local businesses. The shopping packages can be purchased from individual stores.
