A Beautiful Morning: A quiet morning up on Hawk Hill this past Sunday. Looking East over the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, and beyond. The low fog on this morning was unexpected, and I was fortunate to wake up and look out my window. Taken from the Marin Headlands.

San Francisco, home of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Candestick Park and Fisherman’s Wharf. The picturesque seaside city is famous for its historic cable cars, charming row houses and flower child reputation. There are so many reasons to love San Fran but all of these fixtures are just accents on a backdrop of spectacular natural beauty.
San Francisco’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its expansive horizon provide for some stunning light shows. Varied elevations and surrounding ridges mean one can experience the incredible beauty of twilight from just about anywhere. Further, coastal weather patterns often create low lying cloud ceilings and thick blanketing fog which gives sunrise a mystic quality. As gorgeous as they are, the following images only capture a fraction of the essence of a San Fran sunrise and sunset. As those who have experienced one first had will tell you, you simply have to be there to believe it.
'What Dreams are Made of.' I hiked up to Slacker Ridge and took some twilight shots early one morning. The journey to the top involved a hike through a thick wet fog until I rose above it, not unlike an airplane does when ascending through clouds. I think my favorite part of this photo is the mysterious feeling that is created by the car lights shimmering through the fog below. Taken from the Marin Headlands looking back towards San Francisco.

Sutro Baths Sunset. Taken on a warm Autumn evening at the beach behind the old Sutro Baths ruins in San Francisco. I stood there in awe as I witnessed one of the most intense sunsets I can recall.

Hikers take in the stunning view and sunset skies from atop Mission Peak in Fremont, California. All of San Francisco Bay stretches out behind these silhouetted climbers and the city itself is way off in the distance, some 30+ miles away.

Foster City, California sunrise along the shore line, San Francisco Bay. Low tide in this area makes for interesting shapes in the mudflats, especially during a dynamic sunrise. The San Mateo Bridge, left, stretches out 9 miles to cross the bay to the East Bay on the other side (the visible hills).

The San Francisco Bay Bridge just before sunrise. The Bay Bridge connects San Francisco with the city of Oakland. Opened in 1936 it has one of the longest spans in the United States and has two decks that transport nearly a quarter of a million cars each day.

The sunset view from Mission Peak, looking northward. San Francisco off in the distance, Mount Tamalpais in Marin county beyond that. Mission Peak Park is popular with local hikers, sightseers and tourists much in thanks to its sweeping views of Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.
